The power of preventive imaging and technical diagnostics

Gaining sight of the invisible, before illness becomes visible

Within the Linus Pauling Prevention Center, we believe that good medicine today looks beyond symptoms, and thinks beyond standard care. Prevention is not an abstract ideal, but a concrete medical discipline – and in this, technically supported early detection plays a central role.

Although we do not perform imaging or technical examinations ourselves in our center, we do take on the clinically scientifically based indication and coordinating physician work. We actively assist patients in weighing up, requesting and following up on such things as:

Coronary calcium score (CT scan of the coronary arteries)

The calcium score is a simple, rapid, low-radiation scan that can objectively demonstrate asymptomatic atherosclerosis, often years before clinical signs appear. For individuals with familial increased cardiovascular risk, metabolic syndrome or inflammatory burden, this is a powerful prognostic tool, far more accurate than classical risk tables.

Whole-body MRI (without contrast)

This radiation-free technique provides an overview of the entire body: from brain to pelvis, without invasive procedures. It allows early detection of structural or tumor abnormalities in an asymptomatic phase. The whole-body MRI can be a valuable element within an annual preventive check-up in persons with increased risk profiles.

Breast MRI (for high-risk women).

In women with dense mammary tissue, familial burden or genetic predisposition, a conventional mammography is often insufficiently sensitive. A breast MRI then offers a safe, radiation-free and sensitive alternative, especially in younger women or complex cases.

Coloscopy and/or virtual colonoscopy

Colorectal cancer is one of the most common and preventable cancers in the Western world. As part of primary or family increased prevention, we make targeted referrals for a classic colonoscopy or, if indicated, a virtual colonoscopy. The follow-up of polyps, dysplasia or subclinical inflammation is an integral part of our preventive follow-up.

Bone densitometry (DEXA).

Bone loss is an insidious process that is often not diagnosed until after the first fracture. In women from menopause onward, men with risk factors, or patients with inflammatory or hormonal load, we recommend a DEXA scan as primary prevention of osteoporosis and sarcopenia. We do not interpret this scan in isolation, but in the totality of fall risk, muscle status, nutrient content and inflammatory parameters.

Doppler duplex ultrasound of neck vessels or lower extremities

Atherosclerosis is a systemic process. Non-invasive ultrasound of the carotid arteries or peripheral circulation allows us to identify subclinical vasoconstriction, which allows us to take early therapeutic measures. These examinations are especially relevant in high-risk individuals without symptoms.

What exactly does the Linus Pauling Prevention Center do?

We do not conduct these imaging and technical studies ourselves, to avoid commercial or operational conflicts of interest. What we do:

– Scientifically and individually based indication estimation
– Referral to recognized radiological or endoscopic centers
– Interpretation in context: integration of imaging with clinic, biomarkers and lifestyle
– Customized preventive strategies based on the findings

Looking ahead is ethical concern

Preventive imaging is not screening for screening’s sake, but a targeted strategy to maintain health, visualize risks and act early. It is a powerful tool – if properly applied, guided and interpreted.

In a medicine that wants to be forward-looking, personalized and ethical, these techniques are not a luxury, but a responsible part of top medicine.
